Hair loss and the hair-follicle cycling
We humans, on an average, have around 100,000 hair follicles. Our hair passes through these three stages in a cycle:
Anagen Phase (2-5 years): Growing stage for our hair. The amount of hair growth in this cycle decides the length of your hair. If your anagen cycle is longer, you may grow hair way below your waist, whereas people with shorter anagen cycles might not grow hair past their shoulder length. At any given time, about 85% of your hair is in this phase.
Catagen Phase (2-3 weeks): This is a transistion phase which signals the end of active growth of hair. This phase lasts around 2-3 weeks and about 1% of hair is at anytime in this phase.
Telogen Phase (3-4 months): In this phase, your hair are "idle", waiting to fall out. At any given time, 10-15% of your hair is in this phase.
Based on the knowledge of these faces and the average hair on our head, a person loses upto 100 hair daily. And this much of hair fall is perfectly normal. The denser your hair, and the shorter your anagen cycle the more hair you will normally lose per day.
Hair loss treatment
So one should not worry about losing 100 hair strands on a daily basis, but if its considrably more, like around 200+ hair strands falling out on daily basis, then one should immediately consult a doctor. In my experience, this simple home remedy works like a charm to prevent daily hair loss and give life to dead and dry hair:
Take around half a cup of extra virgin olive oil and mix it with 2 table spoons of fresh lime juice. Microwave it for like 10 seconds, and apply gently on hair roots, using fingers. Keep it for like 1-2 hours, and then shampoo it. Do this atleast 2-3 times a month and you will surely notice the positive results!
Friendly Warning: DO NOT shampoo your hair more than twice a week, no matter what hair type you have. You will cause permanent damage to your hair. I would recommend once-a-week shampoo only.
