Lesson 1 : The Blues Scale
The Blues scale is a very popular scale in most kinds
of music. Many great rock riffs are also based on blues scale. Here I will show
the basic pattern of a F-Pentatonic minor blues scale. It
is called pentatonic because it has 5 tones. This scale is moveable. Means one
can make it A or B etc. by starting from the appropriate note on the sixth
string.
e---1------------------4-------------------------
B---1------------------4------------------------
G---1-----------3-----4---------------------------
D---1-----------3-------------------------------
A---1----2------3------------------------------------
E---1------------------4-------------------------------
Start with the thick E string by placing your first
finger on 1st fret, then play 4 fret on the same string but use your
4th finger. Then move to A string, same pattern. Use first finger for 1st fret,
second finger for 2nd fret, 3rd for 3rd and 4th for 4th fret.
Try alternate picking, it will improve your picking
ability on the string.
Practice this scale daily as a warm up, and as much as
you can. Move the scale by starting from different frets on the 6th string.
Like if you start from 5th fret (on 6th string) then it will be A blues
scale. Also try to improvise. Like start from in between and
complete the scale.
Blues scales helped me a lot to improve my speed and
guitar skills. Also, you may find that many popular guitar riffs are based
around the Blues scale. so it is very important to learn and play it.
